What is an… “ASRS”?

An ASRS is an automated storage and retrieval system. In other words, it is a device that serves a specific racking aisle in a warehouse – typically travelling along rails. As the name suggests, it is used to put away goods into specific rack compartments, or to retrieve requested items. ASRSs are particularly well suited to small parts, combining speed with efficiency. They are able to operate in extremely restricted spaces, and their fully or partially automated design ensures high throughput.

An attractive alternative to a track-based ASRS is a narrow-aisle truck. As they are able to travel into and out of each aisle, they can serve multiple racks.

Dematic shows, how an ASRS works in practice.
