What is… “e-commerce”?

Nowadays, you can buy just about anything online: fashion, household goods, furniture, from Amazon, Alibaba, Zalando and Co.. The generic term for all forms of buying and selling on the Internet is e-commerce, or electronic commerce. But it can also include electronically delivered services, such as customer support or online banking.

The boom in e-commerce means growing demand, and growing challenges, for intralogistics: after all, online shoppers do not just want to buy their goods from the comfort of their own home, they also expect prompt delivery to their doorstep. So an increasingly quantity of parcels need to be put together and shipped at high speed. To cope with the ballooning volume, intralogistics processes need to be swift and seamless. A further major challenge is returns management – because customers do not always want to keep what they have bought. In this context, leading vendors such as Linde Material Handling and Dematic are able to provide end-to-end solutions that deliver that all-important technological and competitive edge.
